Sorry for the absence of posts...i'm finally settled in nyc...livin it and lovin it!

I promised I'd keep everyone updated on the status of Artpentry and it looks like my friend back home has been quite busy!

To all you suave ones, here is the Gentleman's Boombox. I must admit, it's nothing short of amazing. Tell me you all don't want one of those hanging around in your living room...I know I do. The Gentleman's Boombox is made from vintage trunks, suitcases, and reclaimed speakers to create the classiest speaker known to man. It’s for the cultured Hip Hop aficionado on his grown man business. They all have iPod hook-ups, internal subwoofers, volume control and the ability to upgrade your style tenfold.

Stop by the Artpentry and get your very own boombox and why not pick up a wooden beard or two on your way out. What's for Artpentry in the future? Floyd plans on the continuous master-minded work and will plan to provide display space for other artists. He hopes to get into more collaborations as well as getting involved in events. An idea of classes and workshops for people who wanna get into the things that go on at Artpentry is an idea in the works. So there ya go..get at it! How & When? The second Friday of every month as part of the Chicago Arts District monthly gallery walk at 1827 South Halsted

I found that the greatest thing about working at my salon has been our focus on keeping our space as artistic and creatively conducive as possible. Recently, we have been interchanging artist’s works to display throughout our salon every other month or so. This month we have work displayed by a beautiful artist by the name of Jesy Grose who I had the pleasure of getting to know a little about.

Growing up in an encouragingly self expressive home near Rockford IL, Grose spawns from all things artistic. Her great grandfather, a born entertainer in Vaudeville, her grandfather a model builder, and cousin, an amazing artist inspiring her at a young age saying “Your dreams could happen if you want it bad enough.” By creatively feeding off the people who filter in and out of her life, Jesy’s emergent style is quite distinct as she uses different windowpanes as her canvas. Jesy’s major goal as an artist is to make people happy. Judging by the amount of praise and traffic coming through the salon to enjoy her works she is well on her way to a successful life as a Chicago artist.

Drill, Coin, Dremel, Ring

I have been making mass jewelry lately and came across a pretty quick and easy, do it yourself, at home ring project to share with you.

1. Find quarter from 1964 or earlier. These coins were 90% silver.

2. Tap the coin down to a smaller diameter while widening the edge. Hold the coin on its edge between your thumb and finger and tap it with a hammer against a hard surface for about fifteen minutes. Tapping too hard or rushing this process will cause the ring to be deformed.

3. Carefully drill a hole through the center. Using a Dremel tool, widen the hole and smooth out the the roughness.

4. Wedge it back onto a drill bit with some cloth for padding on the inside. Slowly spin the ring, this time on the polishing compound on a clean rag and it should be ready to wear.

so i went to the most random house party last night, and met a bunch of awesome people that i've never seen before. one of the those awesome people was a girl named karen. she had the best music selection in her zune. one of the bands she put me up on was this awesome canadian indietronica band called Woodhands.

My rock band dreams have been answered...

As much as I enjoy rockin out as my edgey rockband character with 'thug life' tattooed on her torso.... this. will. be. EPIC! It's going to bring my beatle's mania to a whole nother level. The game is rumored to have songs of every album from their first, 'Please Please Me', to their last recorded, 'Abby Road'. My favorites are Rubber Soul & Sgt. Peppers so I hope they include a ton of songs from those albums.

The game will have scenes from some of the Beatles most historial venues like The Cavern Club, Shea Stadium, The Ed Sulivan Show, and Abby Road Studios. OMG! I can barely contain myself!!

In addition to the game, they will be releasing four new instrument peripherals modeled after those the ones used by The Beatles members themselves. These include a Rickenbacker 325 guitar, a Gretsch Duo Jet guitar, a Höfner bass, and a Ludwig drum set.

Chicken or the Egg

There is a very powerful scene in the film “Henry and June" (about Henry Miller the writer, his wife June Miller, and Anais Nin the writer) where everything begins to unravel after June screams to Henry "You just want experience. You're a writer. You make love to whatever you need." From here their respectably established roles all at once are played out, stripped, swapped, dropped, exposed, switched, regained, etc, etc. Everyone is honest, lying, the victim, the manipulator, and all of these conflicting emotions are actually being felt genuinely. How is this possible? The only answer is that it just seems to be the nature of the artist and the muse relationship.

The relationships of Henry, Anais, and June is especially interesting and telling of the confusing nature of the artist-muse relationship because the two artists (writers) perceive the same muse, June, in two very different perspectives which lead to a creation of two very different literary characters. All the while Henry and Anais also are powerless to June under different circumstances leading up to and after the creative process. June's expectations and needs too vary for the two. And throughout it all there are no clear boundaries or sensibility in the dynamic that at times is explosive creatively and beautifully while at other times explosive in the ugliest ways.

Artist and muse dynamic has always been something I’ve been intrigued by. It is an intricate and delicate relationship that never is simply what it seems to be, what it ought to be- one that inspires and one that is inspired, then both benefit, grow, and compliment one another with the most beautiful and satisfying results (consistently and continuously) may it be a piece of art work, song, poem, or a book.

The lines often are blurred. The role, also. Is it that the artist takes because he/she is in power and the muse gives because he/she gives up power. Or the artist relays because he/she is powerless while the muse is powerful and controls. Could it ever be equal? A partnership? As with most things in life balance seems to be the most difficult thing to find in this relationship. And when a product (painting, song, poem, or story) is presented is it to satisfy only the artist, only the muse, ideally both but how easily is this achieved? Is it possible? The artist is selfish to portray and steal from the muse what he/she only wishes to while the muse is vain and self-important expecting to be portrayed as his/her fantasy self. For both to be satisfied the process seems masturbatory for both parties and if both are dissatisfied, completely volatile and destructive and even worse, wasteful.

Ultimately I believe that since it is the artist who has the creative power with it, also holds the responsibility. But the artist temperament often gives little room for maintaining full control. Is it then always one the master and the other the slave where neither ever stays as one and the role changes without clear boundaries that can ever be set? At any moment the power can shift, there never seems to be stability. But this may be what drives it. Those that create and those that want to be at the heart of it, perhaps can not exist in stability or wish to.

It should be known that though June made an unforgettable impact on Henry Miller and Anais Nin both personally and creatively, eventually she no longer was their muse, yet they continued to write and thrive in their writer identity with other influences and inspiration. As with cases of many artists/writers (Picasso, Warhol, name any artist) for a period there was a muse, then the next period, another.

There are no losers or winners. However, perhaps one of us knows something the other does not. Then I wonder, is calling a love lost a muse a self-defense mechanism on the part of the artist to brush it off and declare "I only did it for my art."

To be honest I don't know which it is. Or who has the power. Sometimes I desperately wish I knew. But then I remember, who cares, go create and be thankful for everything that comes your way that touches you.

Inspired By Color

So, I am planning this trip to travel all throughout India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, etc. in the next year and have been doing quite a bit of research on what I'm going to do when I get there. While looking up different events and celebrations in India I came across some beautiful photography of these children covered in what looked to be vibrant paints or chalk. Beginning his career in 2005, Poras Chaudhary is a self taught freelance photo journalist from India whose unique composition and work in color has won him multiple awards. Of all his pieces, my personal favorites are from his Festival of Color gallery where you can actually look into some of these children’s eyes and feel how much fun they are having.

This Festival of color is an annual celebration in India called Holi (which I definitely plan on attending), celebrated on the day after the full moon in the Hindu month of Phalguna (early March). It celebrates spring, commemorates various events in Hindu mythology and is time of disregarding social norms and indulging in wild games, fires, and the throwing and spraying of colored water and abeer throughout the streets of India.

Lo-fi is popping its simple-minded head up everywhere these days! Even though modern day effects, like auto-tuning (bleh), are spreading like wild fire in the music scene - a few fine musicians are still working towards producing a lo-fi sound as described in my previous blog entry. In the photography world, instead of spending thousands of dollars on a digital SLR, people are starting to purchase lo-fi cameras. Light leaks, mysterious optical aberrations, and image bleeds are welcome with open arms. Here are a couple of my favorite lo-fi (often called "toy) cameras:

Anyone who has ever spent a lazy day with me (hand in a bag of flaming hot cheetos with lime / laptop on my lap / Kill Bill Vol.1 playing in the background) knows that I am constantly searching for new music. My search is mainly for music that I can spin during one of my DJ sets, however, I welcome music of all genres with open arms. During my endless search I've come to realize that a lot of new music that is catching my attention sounds old and lo-fi ... and I just can't get enough of it. Here are two of my favorite examples:

As many of you may know, I have a slight obsession with freak shows and traveling circus' and have recently taken my obsession to another level...
So, on my rigorous search for a circus to join a couple different and obscure options arose that completely blew me away. The first is Lucent Dossier, a chic underground group of circus freaks and musicians from LA who update old carny acts with a sexy modern twist. With all original music and coreography, there live preformances make your fire breathing, unicycling, tripple breasted, bearded lady look like chop liver.

The Second circus/freak show I looked into was a little less likely for me to be able to join due to the fact I have no physical deformity but still worth checking out. 999 Eyes: Taking back the word freak!

So lately my style is into a more "punk & goth" inspired role. I've been getting more into the whole rough look with accessories and apparel. While looking through Japanese street fashion book, Fruits, and saw some great studded anklets worn around heels and boots and started to make them myself. I stubbled upon this rad website with shoe jewelry. Great concept, pricing is still affordable, yet a little high. But i've been looking into leather, studs and chain material and it seems it is definitely DIY affordable.

After hours of planning and hours in the kitchen, the bake sale was a HUGE success! It was really heart-warming to see just how many people were willing to roll up their sleeves and help out a cause. Between two days of selling we managed to raise $400 dollars which will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. I'm sitting at a cafe across my apartment waiting to order a double espresso having a minor anxiety attack (perhaps I should order a single?) I've just started reading "Art/Work" which claims to have (on the cover no less) "Everything you need to know (and do) as you pursue your art career." Now as an artist with a full time day job, and couple other part time jobs in her late-mid 20's there's a lot to get anxious about. And there is also a lot to get serious about.

With all my said jobs while filling all other time with making art I've had little time to focus on the business aspect of art. But, I need to. I have finally taken few necessary steps such as putting together a website and making business cards (a little advice to artists who spend a good amount of money getting nice cards made, DON'T TAKE THEM TO BARS WHERE YOU PLAN TO HAVE A FEW, you'll end up giving away too many of them to people that have zero art connection.) However my journey is just beginning. Being inspired, being creative, and making work is just the very beginning if you want to not only be a successful artist, but a life-long artist.

So here is a list of several books that may help you, motivate you, scare you (out of love) into taking the next step and get out of your head, your studio, hermit, solitary existence, because let's be real here, you need to make a living and be happy in the real world in order to play in your dream world as long as you want.

I Love To Visualize

I get into these funks where nothing inspires me anymore and I need to physically search for something that does. So, this month I have been dedicating most of my searching to youtube music video watching. Anything a little bit obscure that I just can not squeeze from the right side of my own noggin helps lube the ol' wheels and get 'um turnin again.
This weeks video is When I Grow Up by Fever Ray. Former singer of Honey Is Cool and currently one half of The Knife, Karin Driejer took a couple of years off and returned as a solo artist under the name Fever Ray. “Half of what the songs are about is the subconscious,” she says, “ideas of things happening. A lot of it is like daydreaming, dreaming when you’re awake, but tired; a lot of stories come from that world. I try to write when I‘m in that state - I’m very bad at remembering later, so I have to do it right away.” After being in the industry as long as Karin has, she continuously reevaluates herself as a musician and realizes there is so much more to explore in the world of music, even after having the most influensial music website name her release album of the year.

Jobot Gadgets: Dance Party On The Go!

Music is my number one passion - hands down, however, technerdo gadgets and robots are a close second. It's easy to see why discovering new audio gear is one of my favorite activities.

Now, I know the image below (see fig. 1) may resemble a certain hair styling tool, however, this cute colorful tubular device is not used to dry your hair. Recently, a Taiwanese company (go asia!) announced a new portable speaker called the Podio that you can take anywhere and can even mount to bikes or MOPEDS - if you're into that kind of thing... puh! (see fig. 2)

This speaker may be small, weighing a mere 139g (see fig. 3), but it certainly packs a hi-fi punch.

So i recently had the best conversation with one of my favorite people , Kris aka Killa aka Kristen Escobar ( bitch got a lot of nick names ...lol) and she told me about this hillarious and insightful essay . She emailed it to me and i died laughing and agreed with every word .. this earned her a guest spot on this here blog :)

An analysis of hip hop as we know it and its contribution to universal ruin. My offensively late contribution to black history month 2009. Thank you for your consideration.

I want to make it clear that in no way am I knowledgeable enough to thoroughly comment, nor deserving enough to receive praise for the light that I am about to shed on this next topic. I am just as guilty as the next person; black or white, rich or poor; I have contributed both consciously, subconsciously, and ignorantly to this sad epidemic. I am NOT pointing fingers; this is simply an observation/interview, or to euphemize, an intervention of some sort to bring to a head a foul and sinister pattern of behavior that is going to ruin the fucking world. Yeah I said it. Ruin. Universal. My main issue here is music- but this is obviously so much bigger than music. Honestly, my own self-absorption was probably what brought it to light, which later after reading this you will realize is ironic and if you are so lucky to know me might even find hypocritical lol. I initially felt compelled to talk about the slow, unfortunate and depressing self-destructive behavior of current day hip hop. Then I realized its time for hip hop to go to rehab. My diagnosis:

Lately I've spent hours and weeks and minutes pining over this subject all the way down to trying to work my way around the obvious downward spiral (M.I.A.'S engagement and pregnancy, Diplo’s seemingly Janek like isolation, Weezy completely crossing the "I don't give a fuck about anything" line (i.e.- guitar toting, new lip-piercing, way too punk rock image with no grunge- I could go on forever) Diddy calling himself "Ciroc O'Bama" over a breakfast of turkey bacon and asparagus, telling us lower class citizens under a cashmere throw just precisely how we should react to the weather that day on a daily blog basis or whatever, to just trying to come up with a beginning to and end to all of this. Or a solution, if you will. Are we like Michael Myers mom, who continued to neglect her son's OBVIOUS and official issues; while he grew up to be a "monster"… then trying to tell him he's a beautiful kid AFTER the slashed immediate family's jugulars, torture, etc.; multiple stabbings with a motherfucking salad fork? Is it too late to tell the youth of today that the "we shall overcome" approach is still viable in the midst of a "recession"? Or is it simply time to reflect? Strategize? There is a serious void in hip-hop that I feel directly stems from the exploitation of individualism, image, overacceptance and materialism. By the way, Webster solidly defines void as to make ineffectual, invalidate or nullify; like to void a check. Wow.

Problems:

1. Image

"Fuck hip hop: that's my opinion. Either you're part of the problem or the solution. That's it. Image fucked up hip hop…people not knowing who they are or where it came from, and even some that do sell out to be "cool" its whack…we had substance, an obligation to community now its just about what ad gig you got bc of the circle you run in not because you’re dope. There used to be mad mc's or artists and every one of them was different….now you can tell who's forced or who's just whack and the internet's not helping. People are just thirsty for anything new. That is a major issue…but the bigger one is the internal war we're losing through false standards. Music was ours, especially hip-hop and we let it go a soul for the soul….Rappers are showing us everything but what is real, they’re not mirroring real life anymore, rappers have fallen into the trap; watching what the other one did and not calculating his steps. Now media has set that trap for him because he wasn't watching where he was going…….KING DURKA

2. Overacceptance

There are no filters anymore, our generation did it to ourselves. Like take Weezy for example; never had faith in the dude…cash $ was nigga at its lowest form, black people (smartones) felt we moved past that bum line of thought years ago. He's on some straight bamboozled shit. Could Lil Wayne stand next to Huey P? The Nazi's had all kinds of amazing breakthroughs, but how far are people willing to go to allow something new? When we give props to buffoonery it only hurts us. I wouldn't be surprised if I got gigs sometimes cause white people think I'm gonna give them some bamboozled shit they don't understand. Just because no one is doing anything new….everything's a bite. I would love if some new jack changed the game…..What has been added in the last five years? Autotone and dirty south rappin…..blech.

(At this point I throw around a few rappers I think are blogworthy)

Scarface is dope, clever smart rhymes lots to quote there. Never got into 8ball, they were so deep into "I sell rock/ cook this" I wasn't sure why they even rhymed…that music was made to accompany nigs while they cook crack. Outkast is dope not on top of my list. Gnarls Barkley; they aiight, but I would never hate on someone who loves them. There is true craftsmanship there. Just because I don't like it doesn't mean I have to label it whack. I like Qtips joint but wonder how well it will do for the masses. I just want him to get $$$ cause if he doesn't, no more tip just dirty ear canals. I even used Itunes to get it cause I’m so sick of the whack…. WYLIE STYLES

3. Materialism

Oh.Em.Gee. Basically materialism is the umbrella that this genius to some, seemingly coke-induced rant to others, is being comfortably sheltered under. Let me make it clear that when I say materialism, I am not talking about simply the ugly concept of confusing wants, with needs of tangible and temporarily therapeutic objects. Objects that often cost a lot of money. This is the new breed of futuristic materialism. I’m talking about materialism as a mindset. In my personal opinion, Hip- Hop has become materialism personified. WHY? Simple. A. The most successful entities in the game (no, they aren’t just rappers anymore: entities) justify their ignorance, blatant intellectual slight and general lack of cultural responsibility by calling themselves moguls. Moguls who are the same self made multi-millionaires who allow horrid, low-budget, sweatshop endorsed, urban designs that almost always make their way to off-the-rack stores after their first month out. The same moguls that coined, cultivated, and condone “making it rain”. The ones who make it okay to do anything morally foul, stupid or cruel by reminding us that it’s OK because they are rich. They can do stupid shit with their money and absolve themselves from charitable cause because they are simply rich. I’m pissed because as much as I hate to go there, Moguls hold the most power and influence over the youth of today, who naturally develop the same opinions, But with one catch. THEY AREN’T FUCKING MILLIONAIRES. B. Materialism has become glorified through the most fucked up forms of cultural genocide. Seriously because of the fact that explaining the next three concepts would make this essay like 2 years long and would include me crying like a bitch throughout the whole thing, I will leave it in raw form for you to analyze to the best of your ability: Gangbanging, Drugs and Jewelry. Talk about it with your friends. Start a revolution. Seriously. C. Lastly (and yes I say this as an ex- hipster; 4 years removed) materialism has developed such a generic form of exclusivity from party life to fashion, it has literally started moving backwards. The fucking word “exclusive” means NOTHING anymore. Sub culture is mainstream. There is no longer ANY intrigue; I can tell every imported indie DVD you own or don’t own for that matter based on how tight your jeans are, if you wear dookie ropes and snapbacks, Levi’s and porkpies…..the list is sorry. Oh yeah and everyone is a rapper and a DJ. Managers, actors, agents, photographers, environmentalists lol….. I remember back in the day my mom signed me up for dance class. At some point before every recital, I ended up having to get a tutor. Finally my dear mother broke it to me that maybe I wasn’t cut out for dancing. I then started classical piano at the tender age of 5. So Yeah I make some whack assed beats, but I know my circle of fifths goddamnit. Checkmate.

4. Exploiting individualism

So self explanatory:

A. EXPLOIT= to use selfishly for one’s own ends.

B. INDIVIDUALISM=The pursuit of individual rather than common or collective interests; egoism. (As in the non-political connotation)

C. To quote King Durka one last time “An example would be the force of image, hit singles, musical content. The influence of major and independent labels to carry out a certain image. Wu-tang introduced us to 9 ill mc’s all while Nas, Big and Cube, etc. were all doing their own thing.” Basically there wasn’t no ‘bow throwing’ going on to BECOME them. It was cool just to get familiar. Everyone was cool in their comfort zone. Style had nothing to do with how good of an emcee you were. *sigh*………

So it is time for hip hop to go to rehab, and I don't know about anyone else, but I'm willing to hold its hand kicking and screaming through the detox process. Some say THC stays in your system for up to 30 days; fuck it lets shake this shit. In rehab a common form of intervention is to make sure that the subject at hand is indeed ready to make a self willed- open and conscious challenge to change their life/style, and focus on personal voids that make for such behaviors and outcomes. So what's the solution? I wrote this damn frustrating piece and dodged my own friends just to try to answer this question. Do we write this off as a careless mistake for our generation? We accidentally went down the road less traveled and realized why? Should we write off our youth as victims of their own time, tell them to read a few books, and hope for the best?

“I hate this part right herrrrrre…” This is where I wish I had the mental capacity at hand to articulate just how good I wish this section could be. This should be the fucking CON-MOTHERFUCKING-CLUSION. The part where I say something truly phenomenal, atom Breakingly brilliant and kick you in the head with rocket science!!!! But really the only answer I can come up with is this. What I thought was first a matter of inflamed egos and money comes back to the complete opposite. Low self-esteem. It's that simple. We have got to fucking believe in ourselves without all the smoke and mirrors, fucking costumes, without the skinny jeans and ice, limited edition sneakers and money-throwing antics. Its all these condoned behaviors that lead to everyday conversation that lead to documentation (in our case music) and if you do stupid shit all day long, that's all you have to talk, rap and sing about. All you can distract yourself with, and the only filter you can judge yourself and others by. Until we can understand that we as people are bigger than the things we buy and decorate ourselves with, bigger than the drugs that some of us have to sell, and bigger than the system that has enslaved us. We will be listening to ringtone rap and fucking lame as indie hipster "The" bands forever. And that, good sports, is fucking that.

Indie...Pendent...

The word indie is thrown around quite a bit in my group of friends. We get into these conversations about indie bands and cultures, what it is and what it means to them, what they wish it was or what it could be. So, today I thought I would share with you some of their thoughts on the indie culture and what the word actually means.

A1: I see indie as a do it yourself sensibility that originated along with the punk era, but was not until recently when it became known as ‘indie’. Most people use this word to describe the music they are playing or the type of music they like. In actuality, it does not describe the sound of the music as much as the classifying of bands with their promotional philosophies. Unless you follow the word indie with another word like rock, you are not really describing the sound of the music at all.

A2: The thing that gets me the most about people talking about indie music is when they say, “It originated in/from…” Indie music did not originate, it classifies it wasn’t invented! This then gets me started on the fact that people want to be on indie labels. What is an indie label? You go from being an independent band doing your DIY thing to being on an indie label? So what do they do? Just give you a name to associate with, maybe a little money, some hook ups, a home? Is this where touch and go comes in? Indie music and its people confuse me.

A3: Indie film making is where it’s at. A person can create this whole creature free of all outside interference and let it go into the world and let it do its own thing in film fests or what not. There is something very different about indie films. If done well, you can actually feel as if something more went into this and it was written/produced with more intention than just to make money. Its art work…John Waters and his film Cecil B. DeMented is the perfect example of indie filmmaking. Great movie!

Like a chipped girl, this is not your average cookie cutter event. Bake for Hope is the first ever nation-wide, 100% volunteer run, event hosting hundreds of bake sales across the nation. All proceeds are donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer survivors. Chipped Red Polish got in on the cause and will be hosting their own bake sale May 7th. What's great about the Komen foundation is that 75% of the proceeds go to breast cancer patients locally. Helping them with anything and everything.... even a simple car ride to the doctor. The other 25% goes to breast cancer research. AMAZING!

deconstruct, reconstruct till their beautiful monsters

As i'm planning my move to NY I was speaking with a good buddy of mine from Brooklyn and the subject of current fashion trends was brought up. Aside from Chicago's own current use of fedoras and ties, Rodarte was a name that was thrown out. I've heard of the designers, but never really took the time to dabble in and see what they are all about. I was actually thrilled to learn about them because they seem to fuse my current favorite styles all into one- reconstruction, punk, glam & "sexiness". By "sexiness," i mean of course the looks similar to my personal favorite designer Roberto Cavalli.

Here is was style.com had to say about the two-

The fashion press loves a quirky backstory, and Kate and Laura Mulleavy had a doozy of one when they hit New York in the spring of 2005. Among other charming evidence of outsiderdom, the sisters were reported to operate out of a cottage behind their mother's house in Pasadena, California. These self-taught creatures, the dispatches breathlessly implied, were naïfs who had simply taken their dress-the-dolly games to a radical extreme. (Never mind that both went to Berkeley, Kate studying art history, Laura English literature.)

Rodarte's "soft abstractions," as the designers described their intent for Fall 2006—otherworldly gowns that were all petals, tendrils, and undulations—appeared in the pages of Vogue and W within months. Almost neurotically obsessive craftsmanship was quickly identified as the label's hallmark; "wearable" wasn't exactly a Rodarte catchphrase. I have been going a bit overload on my personal blog with new films coming out. I consolidated them here to share with you as well.

These films may fall under "indie" or whatever those titles people put to films that don't get played at giant theatres with an army of ushers in merlot vests and video arcades and 100 different screening rooms split neatly under "chick flick," "dude flick" and "family." I have been told I have a pretentious taste, but I really don't. It's expensive to go to the theatre these days so I just make my selections very carefully. Also, I'm not a fan of happy endings (I'm not opposed them by any means, just when they are so fabricated and forced) which Hollywood films all have. God forbid we let our good Americans leave the theatre with any other thought than "happy" "funny!" "cooooooool....." or "heart throb, SIGH." I don't take prescription happy pills in real life and I certainly don't need them crushed into my movie reels. I watch "depressing" films and I don't need Prozac but people that watch "happy" movies pop them like it's hot. Hmmm... Give me Life everwhere. You know what I mean? Then you'll be able to really live this life. I'll also never understand why so many people are turned off by subtitles. Last time I checked the literacy rate was 99% (and I just checked it.)

Dangerous Curves Ahead

Tamika Martell , founder of A-Line Style Services and fellow fashionistas Latina, is one dope chick! Not only is she driven to succeed, but she is by far one of the most down to earth females you will find in the fashion industry in Chicago! I was able to have a sit down with her about her up and coming fashion show Dangerous Curves! The show is all about the culmination of women of all cultures and all sizes coming together to show off their dangerous curves for a great charity cause! The show is a dream come true for this ½ Puerto Rican and ½ African American young woman who is now styling Chicago locals and graduated from the Northern Illinois University Fashion Merchandising program. Take a look at the interview below for a more intimate look on how she got to where she is now as well as her upcoming fashion show!

CRP: Tamika, what inspired you to begin your own fashion styling business?
TM: Well, to be honest, it really just came to me one day. I recently found religion again and with that I found a clarity in my life and I realized that I was not pursuing my dreams and goals or leading my life the way I wanted! I left a very corporate job and followed my gut. I was always being complimented on how I put together outfits and was always being asked for help on outfitting friends and family so I figured why not just go ahead and pursue styling for a living? It just came naturally!

CRP: There are a lot of people out there who dub themselves stylists, what makes you different? TM: I started A-Line Style Services with an idea in mind of the kind of woman I was set out to help. I myself, have a hard body type to dress and I know there are many other women out there who are just like me. I saw a niche market in the industry that needed some attention and I set out to give it to them. I am not exactly a plus size, but I am also no skinny minny and I know women like me who don’t understand clothing will often times just give up on shopping or creating wardrobes that make them look incredible. I figured it would be a great thing if I could offer my services and fashion background to the women like me, but give them better direction and a reason to look good again!

CRP: What are you currently working on to help jumpstart your business?
TM: Over the last few months, I have just hit the ground running! I am currently focusing on PR, promoting, styling in photo shoots and building up clientele with both general customers and retailers. It’s just me and I have to wear many hats in my company in order to become successful.

CRP: I know you have a fashion show coming up, can you tell me a bit more about it?
TM: Yes I do! I like to think of it as my coming out party! The show is called Dangerous Curves Ahead Spring Charity Fashion Expo. This event will truly help land me as a strong professional with great goals in mind for showcasing Chicago fashion and retailers. Its all about incorporating great looks for women of all sizes and of all cultures.I have a great Latino designer that I am showcasing! Her name is Angelica Santoyo of Angel Eyes Fashions. I am from a mix background, I am Puerto Rican and Black and I really feel that the mix in cultures will really add something special to my show! It’s about fashion for everyone and really just allowing people to gain a better understanding of the looks that work best for them. It is also an event for a good cause. A portion of the proceeds will be going to 2nd Chance Chicago, an organization that provides biblically-based programs and social outreach services to women and their children that address homelessness.

CRP: When and where will the show be at?
TM: The show will be at the Zhou B Art Center 1029 W. 35th Street Chicago, IL 60609 on Saturday April 25, 2009 from 7-10 PM

CRP: Do you have any trend or styling tips for our readers?

Chicago Artists Resource

This site is extremely helpful in finding out what's going on in Chicago in fields of dance, music, theatre, visual and more. There's always really great interviews of local artists (performers, writers, gallery owners, etc.) Also the jobs and "calls for artist" feature is really helpful if you are looking to find some work or shows/grants that are currently accepting and looking for submissions.

Fecal Face

This has got to be one of my favorite sites. It focuses on the San Fransisco art scene and heavily features and promotes shows and galleries in the city. However, they also go beyond the bay area when it comes to featured artists and shows. My favorite parts are always the artist interviews and the studio visits. I've come across so many amazing artists thanks to Fecal Face.

My Art Space Blog

I find this blog to be very informative. Might not be the most engaging or exciting site for everyone but I have read many posts on here that have been very helpful on the business and legal end of the art world. They have been featuring more artist interviews recently. I can't say that I'm always a huge fan of the work featured on here, but regardless it's nice to hear different perspectives on approach and thought and also see different works.

Are you a Slasher?

I’m pulling this out of my nerd hat, and for some of you it may not be as exciting of a read as who’s performing at lollapolooza (see Jobot’s post below!). Nevertheless, I think as most of us are starving artists it’s important for us to keep our business game in check.

If you’re anything like me, you’re a twenty-something trying to refine your talents and find your niche but you have so many interests and find that you’re pretty decent at everything you set your mind to its just hard to find a focus. As I’ve stated in my bio, I have a marketing background, I plan events, I’m a graphic designer, I model, I work at two bars, and now I’m a blogger. Creatively speaking, I get bored very easily if I don’t have multiple projects.

We, my friends, are called Slash Careerists or Slashers for short. A term that’s been popping up the last few years, and was revisited in an interview on NBCnews.com with Marci Alboher a blogger for Yahoo.com & The New York Times. We carry on multiple career endeavors, not necessarily at the same time, but we can find that once we’ve learned and mastered one task it’s easy to add another ingredient to our lives.

This brought me back to a book I read a few years back called “4-hour Work Week” by Tim Ferris. This guy is genius! He’s found a way to do everything he’s ever wanted to do…NOW. He’s a National Chinese kickboxing champion, holds a Guinness world record in tango, an MTV break dancer in Taiwan, and a hurling competitor in Ireland. The man is only 33 years old. If any of this sounds appealing to you, I suggest you pick up this book.

Marci Alboher wrote this book, “One Person / Multiple Careers”. I haven’t read the book yet as I just found out about her and her book yesterday but it seems like a book I need to get ASAP. You should too. Lets read it together! Marci is a journalist slash author slash speaker slash lawyer and after seeing her interview, seems like someone with some credibility. Watch that interview here.

So through researching about the so-called “Slash Careerist” I came across this video called Authors at Google. Marci Albohler and Tim Ferris were guest speakers for Google employees. The video is EXTREMELY long but SOOOO beneficial. As artists, it’s easy to perfect our craft because it comes naturally. The business side is what requires a little work and I think this video and these books can help all of us gain a little strategy to our lives.

The Perry Stage Will Rage

This year's Lollapalooza line-up was announced this week and at the very bottom of the page, in print that is entirely too small, is the list for artists that will be performing at the Perry Stage. Don't let the font size be indicative of the talent of these artists because they will inevitably make you dance... even if you're an uncoordinated robot like me!

These guys came out with one of my favorite electro jams of all time! Although, their DJ sets may be slightly monotonous to those used to poppy electro - their original work is always fantastic.

This group scored a 9.1 out of 10 for their album on Pitchfork - That's HUGE! They took a bite out of classic disco and regurgitated it - forming an amazing modern disco/electro sound that I can't get enough of.

Chipped Red Polish's own girl wonder, Drea, joins Million $ Mano to form what some may categorize as an electro-rock duo (In my opinion their music isn't really bound to any genre in particular). He Say, She Say is a duo that will absolutely blow you away with their infectious hooks. If you haven't seen them perform live, you most definitely cannot miss their set at Lolla - you WILL be super salty if you miss it!

Percussions For Your Pleasure!

Growing up in a musical family was both a blessing and pain. My parents made me take piano for 8 years when really all I wanted to do was play the drums. I would go to the library and look for what I thought to be the 'coolest' looking drum books or tapes, take them home and watch them repeatedly for the next couple weeks until my dad would drive me back to do it all again. After they budged and let me get a kit at age 13 it was all over, I was in love. So, I wanted to share with you the two drummers that influenced me most at the ripe age of 13.

Elvin Jones, a member of the John Coltrane Quartet, was the most influential jazz drummer of the post-bop era. As the first drummer to fully explore broken triplet subdivisions, he inspired most of my practices, getting me out of standard 4/4 swing and into more syncopation and left hand dominance.

Sheila E comes from an insanely talented family and is known best as the drummer for Prince. I have seen her a couple times and she never fails to blow my mind. She definitely empowers females but her raw talent is want really draws you in.

while i was browsing i was just thinking of the transition that fashion photography has taken.

going from literal, straight forward, commercial photographs of women in simply just the clothing to artistic views on transforming pieces of clothing into literal artwork.

i truly think it's amazing to not only feel something when you see the photograph, but to have that connection with the actual garment.

being a designer, i think that is the whole purpose, having that connection between designing from your mind and the message you want to get across to others.

Recently a good friend of mine started something pretty amazing. Floyd Davis IV now has a prime store front spot in Chicago's Art District. The goal of his business, Artpentry, is to be a company that serves as a creative umbrella for his carpentry and fine art. Some of the services he will offer will include, but not limited to, paintings, print works, wooden beards, custom furniture, retail space design & build, murals, residential design & build, and basically anything needed in a traditional or non conventional capacity dealing with art or carpentry.

I was with him first hand visiting the soon to be Artpentry, being a business owner myself, it gave me chills standing outside the storefront, seeing his logo up on the window and watching his dream evolve into reality. Another great thing with Artpentry is that Floyd has decided to involve his fellow creative friends and showcase their arts as well. I couldn't be happier knowing that my clothing line Thrift - the good find, will be able to be involved and sold at such a great place with such a great concept.

One of Floyd's up and coming ventures are once vintage trunks & chests turned into speakers and ipod players. I will be getting in on this using my great thrifting skills and spots to hopefully find some great vintage pieces for his unique art.

And here is lucky me, sporting my own custom made lumbeard. The Lumbeard was created through a foolish convo we we're having of the possible ability for women to have a beard to look tougher and the next day, there ya go, he created the lumbeard. The lumbeard is available in many shades of colors, featuring custom accents such as bling jewels, tiny birds, dreads, etc. Keep on the lookout because these beards are rad as hell.

Music Meets Fashion-A Match Made in a Hellish Heaven

Music, art and fashion are an uneven match made in heaven. With one comes the other. It doesn’t surprise me that over time music and fashion have become united forces in the industry. It seems that every musical icon leaves their very fashionable statement behind. Think back to the eighties when Blondie, Pat Benetar and Joan Jett reigned, you can visualize each of the artists’ looks! A touch of glam mixed with some grunge and punk. A funky look with incredibly glam makeup and dark, dark eyes. Even today, we still see the same thing. You think of Kanye and you see a hip hop prepster.

Yet, today it’s not just about the look. It’s about banking on the look and creating a brand. Artists are taking it to the next level when it comes to fashion. They are creating their own brand by banking on the look that they already wear. It’s no longer just about styling yourself, but now artists are styling their fans and the public.

Musicians like Sean Combs, Gwen Stefani, Jay-Z and Justin Timberlake are each incredibly successful musicians turned fashion designers. Each had a very distinctive style of their own as performers and took a chance to lend that style to their fans. Each of these stars now has launched incredibly successful lifestyle brands in the fashion industry. Sean combs launched sean jean, gwen Stefani created L.A.M.B, Jay Z created Rocawear and Justin Timberlake is backing the most recent William Rast line. Each of these musicians made the transition into fashion designer smoothly and with flare.

What makes a musician a great designer? This is a question that is often mulled over and poked fun in the industry. Yet, in all reality these musicians/artists are incredibly smart to take heed and follow through with creating a brand. In essence these people are artists and many artists are jacks of all trades. They can dip their hand in every pot and genuinely create a beautiful work of art. What each has proved is that they have an innate sense of personal style along with an eye for the graphic appeal of art and what the public wants and needs.

Gwen Stefani always had an interesting look during her heyday in No Doubt. She definitely made her share of fashion don’ts, but overall she was an artistic piece of fashion iconography. She took risks and made statements which, in turn, caused many of her fans to follow suit. As she matured and ventured off into solo-dom she began to mature in her fashion sense. As a solo artist she made more couture choices and was always looking for the unknown fashion types. It was a trip to Japan that definitely lead to her inspiration for the LAMB and the Harajuku Lovers fashions. Her line was colorful, bright, feminine yet edgy and different than the cookie cutter looks you saw at the time. Her artistic flare and ingenuity truly accounted for her success at creating a refutable line!

Most recently, the critically acclaimed pop tart, Justin Timberlake, flipped the switch and started a collaborative effort fashion line titled William Rast. Timberlake joined forces with Trace Ayala and created a full force, in your face fashion line that is one part bad ass and one part vintage chic. The line bleeds with American inspired looks that encompassed Thelma and Louise meets the high fashion streets of New York. The strength behind the line is the fact that Timberlake already had a large fan base while Ayala had some mad skills in the fashion industry. Timberlake made a wise choice to embody his own personal style within his line and brand it with smart looks, decent pricing and market it to his fan base.

This trend of musicians turning designers is in no way a new trend. It’s been around for quite some years, but it seems that today’s new breed is a bit wiser and all the more talented and are able to truly bring a brand (themselves) to the next level. They have creative streaks with a business mogul’s mind. They are the revolution of the artist as we know them today. Take heed in what they offer and why not follow suit. We need to move away from plane jane brands and truly create clothing that is inspirational.

When I was pondering what my first posting at Chipped Red Polish should be, it was pretty obvious it had to be this video. It's from "Creature Comforts" and it shows interviews with different "animals" and their views on art. Some make very valid and intellectual points, while others are just brutally honest and at times so simple. I think the spectrum presented in this video well represents how we perceive art. It's something different for all of us-

"What do you consider art?"

“Oh I've got a good answer for that. I’ve thought about this for years. My definition of art is anything that anyone creates that invokes a reaction from someone else, even an animal. That’s art. Art’s also a friend of mine, a Mexican guy, nice guy.”

Sadiyya & I have been friends for some time now and I’ve had the opportunity to watch her talent evolve into something really special. Sadiyya Ameena Coates is not your average 19-year-old aspiring photographer. She sees beauty in the odd. She’s the most outspoken non-talker I know. Sadiyya may not say much but it’s alluring to watch her judge the world with her gigantic dark pervious eyes.

We met for sushi to go talk photography and life. She showed up at my apartment looking spunky as always. Purple beanie over her mod asymmetrical bob. Huge clear 1970’s grandma style glasses atop her nose and the coolest and most amazing knee high Aztec moccasin boots that only she could pull off. We walked over to Zen Noodle, sat down and browsed the menu. After ordering and watching Sadiyya argue with the old lady about weather a honeydew coconut bubble tea would be good or not, we sort of just jumped right into the questions without even realizing it.

Arica: What is it about photography that just does it for you?
Sadiyya: Umm, the endless possibilities and literally making a dream a reality. I don't know how to explain it. I'm not good at expressing myself.
A: Expressing yourself doesn't always have to be with words. It can be with feelings too.
S: I know that's why I don't talk well.
A: But you express well. Through your facial expressions and body language... I know that photography is important to you.

S: You know the day we did our photoshoot. That was a milestone from me. Because it was just like, there was something I had in my head for so long and you and Jaky (the makeup artist) helped create it...and you didn't have to. I always tell people I appreciate how you and Jaky contributed to helping me with that shoot.
A: I think it was a milestone for all of us.
S: REALLY!?
A: Oh Yeah! Because we all collaborated on something that helped us all progress. So many people were like, "Arica, that looks nothing like you. But in a good way!" Its crazy how one project can change so much. That was all something you captured and will help Jaky & I if we go on to pursue what we contributed. But, I definitely think that you have something. Something special.

S: (Giggles)

A: No, you do! I mean, I know on my end. I think this might look good and maybe I should stand like this. I can control me, but you're controlling the camera and the lighting and capturing the moment perfectly. You have to be so attentive to everything. I think photography's hard.
S: And another thing, I realized I think I left Columbia not only to save money but for personal growth too. If I were taking my classes I wouldn't have the time to be doing what I’m doing. Being away from Columbia is helping me find myself. Teachers give you guidelines and rules that keep you from doing your own thing. Like. I've always been into bizarre high-fashion & editorial photography. I'd get my vogues in the mail. Even like, I asked my mom to cancel my regular vogue so that I could get Vogue Italia because they have more exotic bizarre photography. I'm just hoping for some inspiration for the summer. Like you know those bible-sized vogues? Were the whole magazine is just amazing ass pictures. I want the Italian vogues!

A: Haha, so what's your favorite photograph you've taken?
S: I don't know! I was trying to think of one! Well the one that pops up is that one of you on the bridge with your eyes closed. I don't know there's just something about that picture. But I don't know.
A: You don't have a favorite though? Like one you just love?
S: I think every artist is critical of their own work. But, when I look at this photo, I see progression. If it wasn’t for your courage and Jacqueline’s attentiveness to detail, the photos we took that one cold Friday wouldn’t have come out as beautiful as they did. The locations we shot at were on private property. We put ourselves at risk, trespassing in areas where buildings were being torn down and shooting while debris hung over our heads. The enthusiasm, dedication, creativity and passion that both you and Jacqueline share with me contributed to the steppingstone in my love for photography and the great success in my future.
A: That would probably be the last picture I would pick. But that's just through my eyes.
S: Really!? What was yours?
A: Umm, not that one! But I'm looking as the perspective of the model. So my idea would be critical to my work as the model.

A: What is the most important thing to remember to get a good image?
S: Just shoot it!
A: Just Shoot it?
S: Yeah! Just Shoot it! If you see something that catches your eye, SHOOT IT. NO matter what conditions. Even if its a person, and you're afraid they're gonna be like "get the fuck outta my face!". You have to take chances to get what you want. That satisfaction will be well worth it.

A: Who are your influences?
S: Gregory Crewdson and Miles Aldridge are my FAVORITE influences among many others. In my photography I’d like to create photos similar to both photographers, if not better, by combining Crewdson’s surreal settings and amazing lighting techniques with Aldridge’s saturated colors, great angles and unique models. I will be one satisfied photographer.
A: Do you have a specific photograph from one of those photographers that stands out in your mind?
S: Yes. It’s a photo by Gregory Crewdson, shot with a 8 x 10 Large Format Camera.

Ever since being introduced to his work and this one particular photo, it has stuck with me till this day. When people criticize photography, many times I hear “Oh. I could’ve done that!” “BUT YOU DIDN’T!” is how id usually respond back. This photo reminds me to appreciate! Appreciate all aspects that go into taking a photo. It’s not about just pressing a button. People fail to realize that not only photographers, but all artists take risks. It’s a passion that we were born with. It is a passion that we live for. It's hard capturing the right moment at the right time.

A: So if you weren't a photographer, what would you do?
S: I have nooo idea! Probably be a starving artist. (laughter) Maybe something in ceramics, haha! It would definitely be something in the arts.
A: Do you have any other artistic talents? Do you draw or paint or anything?
S: I draw a little. But its more abstract stuff. In high school I use to take all the art classes including the pottery class.
A: So you could always open your own ceramics shop!
S: Yeah, once I make a little money off of photography.... I can open up my own studio! Haha, with a pottery wheel...
(laughter)

We turned our conversation on to random things like the south side and motorcycle gangs. She showed me her purple suede journal that she uses for everything. "It's important to put yourself in the universe, whether you're saying it, writing it, or photographing it." Completely doodled up, she explains, "If you don't like it, color it in!" This girl is amazing and has been a great support of Chipped Red Polish. She did our site's photoshoot!! This is why she's our very first spotlight photographer.
